Why are COVID breakthrough cases by vaccine type not being reported?

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – Government agencies do not appear to be tracking the number of breakthrough cases by specific vaccine, or if they are, they are only collecting data roughly.

New York has a website dedicated to providing up-to-date information on breakthrough cases, but it does not include vaccine-specific information.

Warren County regularly provides information on groundbreaking cases in its daily COVID reports. NEWS10 asked if they should also provide this information to the New York State Department of Health (DOH). They do and have been required to do so for some time, according to Public Health Director Ginelle Jones.

Albany County reported that 49% of new COVID cases were in fully vaccinated residents on Tuesday. The county health department said it was also reporting groundbreaking cases and vaccine-specific information. They said the information was self-reported by fully vaccinated COVID-positive residents and shared with the state through CommCare.

NEWS10 contacted DOH on Tuesday regarding vaccine-specific information on the breakthrough cases, but after several emails, could not get a clear answer on what happened to the information after counties sent it. They pointed us to the state’s website with groundbreaking case data.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) told NEWS10 on Tuesday that they did not track breakthrough cases by vaccine type, even though its website said they track hospitalizations and deaths of breakthrough cases. Part of which included vaccine-specific information.

“The CDC monitors reported data on hospitalized and fatal vaccine discovery cases to understand: trends by age and gender; the specific types or brands of vaccines involved; the underlying health problems of these people; which variants of SARS-CoV-2 are seen in people who are hospitalized or who die. ”

The website was reportedly last updated on September 7.

NEWS10 asked the CDC if they could tell us why they aren’t tracking breakthrough cases by vaccine type but haven’t gotten a response.

Information on COVID, including cases, vaccinations, the COVID-19 report card and deaths in long-term facilities, was previously available in various locations. New York on Tuesday unveiled a new website with direct links to one-page COVID reports, to make information more accessible.

“Providing the public with new data on COVID-19 and making existing data easier to access and understand is another step we are taking towards more transparency,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “We will continue to do everything possible to share the latest information with New Yorkers, especially during this unprecedented pandemic. ”

NEWS10 emailed the governor’s office on Tuesday afternoon asking if vaccine-specific information would eventually be available online, but had no response.
