Auckland’s population drops for the first time

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, New Zealand’s population growth has slowed, with Auckland experiencing a population decline for the first time in its history, Stats NZ said today.

“New Zealand has seen slower population growth in all regions,” said Hamish Slack, responsible for population estimates and projections.

“COVID-19 international travel restrictions continued to curb population growth due to international migration during the year June 2021.”
